Funeral and cremation services in Silver City
Silver City is the county seat of Grant County, with 9,704 residents in the 2020 Census. Two funeral homes are in town: Baca's Funeral Chapels, here since 1987 with its own crematory, and Peace of Heaven Funeral Chapel, a newly opened, independently owned chapel on Highway 180. Both say they answer around the clock.
Veterans
Fort Bayard National Cemetery, a VA national cemetery just east of Silver City at 200 Camino De Paz, has space for casketed and cremated remains. Burial there is free for eligible veterans, including the headstone. Peace of Heaven mentions arranging Fort Bayard burials. See veterans burial benefits in New Mexico.
Cremation in Silver City
Baca's says each of its locations has its own crematory. Peace of Heaven doesn't say where cremations are done, so if keeping your loved one in one provider's care matters to you, ask. Peace of Heaven's website also promises prices in writing before you commit to anything.
What it costs
None of the Silver City providers listed here publish prices online, so call and ask for the General Price List. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every funeral home must give you itemized prices on request, including over the phone. The best comparison question is: "What is your total price for a direct cremation, including pickup, the state's $230 cremation-permit fee and tax?" For reference, published direct cremation prices across New Mexico range from $895 to $3,604 (see every published price).
