The Big Takeaway

The same basic direct cremation — the very same service — costs dramatically more depending on which funeral home a family happens to call first. In our data, the gap between the lowest and highest published price is 3.5x: $895 at one home, $3,145 at another.

Most families never compare. Grief, time pressure, and the assumption that "prices are pretty much the same" mean the first call often becomes the only call. But the numbers tell a different story — even within Albuquerque alone, direct cremation runs from $895 to $3,145.

The takeaway is simple and hopeful: comparing a few published price lists can save a family thousands of dollars, with no loss in dignity or care. You have the right to those numbers, and you have time to look.

How New Mexico Compares Nationally

$2,141

New Mexico median

Direct cremation, this study

$2,202

National median

NFDA reported figure

New Mexico's median direct cremation price of $2,141 is about $61 below the national median of $2,202 reported by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) — roughly 3% lower. On the whole, New Mexico families pay somewhat less than the typical American family for a direct cremation. Either way, the within-state spread of 3.5x matters far more to any single family than the gap to the national average.

Methodology & Data

This study covers 50 funeral providers across 13 New Mexico cities. Prices come from three sources: published General Price Lists (GPLs), funeral-home websites, and verified directory data. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every funeral home in the United States must provide an itemized General Price List to anyone who asks — in person, no appointment or purchase required — which makes funeral pricing unusually comparable when families take the time to gather it.

Of the 50 providers, 25 have pricing sourced directly from official GPLs; the remainder come from funeral-home websites and verified directory listings. For each provider we recorded direct cremation (combining a provider's flat direct-cremation price or its "from" starting price into one figure), basic professional services, immediate burial, and crematory fees where published. Medians and ranges are computed across all providers that report each field; we only publish a range for a service when at least five providers report it.

Funeral prices change, and individual families may be quoted differently based on their specific needs. These figures are a snapshot for planning and comparison, not a quote. Always request a provider's current General Price List before making a decision.
