Before you order
Get the cemetery's marker rules first: size, material, flat or upright, and its setting fee. Then ask each seller for one written total covering the stone, lettering, foundation, setting and tax.

What a headstone costs
Because local sellers don't publish prices, here is the one New Mexico seller that does. Serenity Stone Co. lists granite memorials "from $400," with most between $500 and $1,000. Its flat markers run from $400 for a 16x8-inch infant marker to $1,385 for a 36x14-inch large marker. Note that it doesn't deliver or install, and its Los Lunas store is relocating, so it's currently by appointment in Elephant Butte.
The stone isn't the whole bill. Expect some of these on top:
- The cemetery's setting or foundation fee. Sunset Memorial Park charges a setting fee to install markers, though it doesn't publish the amount.
- A vase. Sunset requires in-ground vases to be bought through it and lists one at $125.
- Extra lettering, photos and tax.
The FTC's Funeral Rule, which requires funeral homes to give itemized price lists, does not apply to monument dealers or to cemeteries without an on-site funeral home (FTC). So ask for every price in writing.
Cemetery rules in Albuquerque
- Sunset Memorial Park: markers must be granite or bronze, at least 3 inches thick. All ground-burial areas require flat (flush) markers; uprights are allowed only in select in-ground cremation areas. Sizes vary by location, and Sunset charges a setting fee (Sunset FAQ).
- Mount Calvary and Gate of Heaven: markers from outside vendors are accepted, but get the plot's requirements first. The cemeteries may refuse to install items that don't comply, unapproved memorials are removed, and "fees may apply" to products bought elsewhere (Catholic Cemetery Association).
- Sandia Memory Gardens publishes a flower and decoration policy (no temporary markers or outside vases) but no marker rules. Fairview Memorial Park and Vista Verde Memorial Park don't publish marker rules. Ask before you order.
Veterans: a free headstone or marker
- The VA provides a government headstone or marker free for the unmarked grave of an eligible veteran in any cemetery, including private cemeteries (VA). Choices include upright granite or marble headstones and flat granite, marble or bronze markers; a private cemetery may limit the style.
- Apply with VA Form 40-1330 online, by mail or by fax. Help line: 800-697-6947.
- If the grave already has a private headstone, you can choose a bronze medallion to attach to it instead (VA Form 40-1330M; the cemetery must approve it and sign). It's one or the other, not both.
- A private cemetery may charge a setting fee for a VA marker, and the VA doesn't pay installation outside national cemeteries.
- In a national cemetery, such as Santa Fe National Cemetery (the closest to Albuquerque), the cemetery orders the marker and sets it at no cost.
- Only the VA can inscribe a VA marker; a local monument company can't add to it. A spouse buried in a private cemetery can be added as an inscription on the veteran's VA marker.
