Funeral and cremation services in Las Cruces
Las Cruces is the county seat of Doña Ana County and New Mexico's second-largest city, with 111,385 residents in the 2020 Census. Three funeral homes are based in the city: Baca's Funeral Chapels & Sunset Crematory, Getz Funeral Home, and Perches - Graham's Funeral Home, which Google Maps still lists under its former name, La Paz-Graham's.
If someone dies unexpectedly
Any sudden or unexpected death in New Mexico, including in Doña Ana County, goes to the state Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI). Your loved one may be taken to the OMI or held at a designated funeral home. Either way, you choose the funeral home, even if it's not the one where your loved one is being held, and that funeral home contacts the OMI and arranges the release. The OMI doesn't charge families for its examination. Its Grief Services program offers free support to New Mexico families: (505) 925-4412. See what to do when someone dies in New Mexico.
Families in El Paso, out of state or in Mexico
El Paso is about 45 miles south. Perches - Graham's belongs to the family-owned Perches funeral homes of El Paso and Juárez and ships remains to Mexico and worldwide. Baca's says it handles out-of-state arrangements and transfers. If the family lives elsewhere, cremating here and bringing the ashes home is usually the simplest and least expensive option: cremated remains can travel as carry-on luggage or be mailed by USPS Priority Mail Express.
Veterans
The closest VA national cemetery is Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso. Burial in a national cemetery is free for eligible veterans, along with a government headstone and military funeral honors. All three Las Cruces funeral homes say they help with veterans' arrangements, and Perches - Graham's offers special veterans pricing on request. See veterans burial benefits in New Mexico.
Cremation in Las Cruces
Baca's says it has on-site crematories, and Perches - Graham's says it owns its crematory. Getz doesn't say where its cremations are done, so if keeping your loved one in one provider's care matters to you, ask. See New Mexico funeral homes with their own crematory.
What it costs
None of the Las Cruces providers listed here publish prices online, so call and ask for the General Price List. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every funeral home must give you itemized prices on request, including over the phone. The best comparison question is: "What is your total price for a direct cremation, including pickup, the state's $230 cremation-permit fee and tax?" For reference, published direct cremation prices across New Mexico range from $895 to $3,604 (see every published price).
