Funeral and cremation services in Gallup
Gallup is the county seat of McKinley County, with 21,899 residents in the 2020 Census. Two funeral homes are based in the city: Rollie Mortuary, family owned with its own crematory and cemetery, and Cope Memorial Chapel, which also has chapels in Aztec, Farmington and Kirtland. Both say they answer around the clock.
Cultural and religious traditions
The state Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) says: "Family burials (including traditional Navajo members) are allowed in the State of New Mexico." If the OMI is involved, it suggests asking your cultural or religious leaders for guidance on working with it, and calling its Decedent Affairs office at (505) 272-1361 about the documents needed for release. If traditions matter to your family, ask each funeral home how it supports them on your first call; neither one's website describes this.
Veterans
The Gallup State Veterans Cemetery, run by the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, is at 333 National Cemetery Dr. (505-905-9770). The nearest VA national cemetery is Santa Fe National Cemetery. Have the veteran's discharge papers (DD-214) ready; see veterans burial benefits in New Mexico.
Cremation in Gallup
Rollie Mortuary says it has its own crematory. Cope Memorial Chapel's website refers to "the crematory" without saying whether it owns one, so ask if keeping your loved one in one provider's care matters to you. See New Mexico funeral homes with their own crematory.
What it costs
None of the Gallup providers listed here publish prices online, so call and ask for the General Price List. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every funeral home must give you itemized prices on request, including over the phone. The best comparison question is: "What is your total price for a direct cremation, including pickup, the state's $230 cremation-permit fee and tax?" For reference, published direct cremation prices across New Mexico range from $895 to $3,604 (see every published price).
